Access Control: What Is It?

28 Apr 2017

Access Control is becoming more and more popular with businesses because it provides so many benefits. Here we explain what access control is and how it can provide extra protection for your business.

What is Access Control?

As the name suggests, Access Control gives businesses the ability to control access.

Doors are fitted with automatic locks which unlock when a fob or key card is held against a reader or a code is keyed in. The door unlocks for a predetermined amount of time to allow access and then locks again.

The system can be used solely on main entry doors or on multiple doors throughout a building. Each individual door can be programmed to automatically lock or unlock during certain times.

You can restrict which parts of a building employees or visitors can access by programming their pass to only open certain doors. Individual key cards or fobs can be programmed to open doors during specific times or at any time.

Why choose access control?

Access control provides many benefits. You have complete control over programming the keys which means you can limit access to restricted areas and you can restrict out of hours access for those who don’t need it.

Once keys are programmed you can change the access levels remotely. This means that if a key is lost or stolen you can deactivate it and there is no requirement to change any locks.

Every time a pass is used, it is recorded; you can monitor who has entered the building and at what time. This is useful if there is a security issue as you will be able to check who was in the building.

With access control, doors lock automatically so there is no risk of someone forgetting to lock up after themselves. This increases security on individual offices and rooms.

Doors can be unlocked from the inside using a ‘push to exit’ button and you can link the system to your fire safety system to automatically unlock doors if the fire alarm is activated.

Depending on your business requirements, you can also install intercom systems or video door entry systems so that you can determine who is trying to gain access before allowing them into a building or area.
